When trying to view .MOD files on our multimedia iMacs, they won’t play.  You can change the file extension to .MPG or .MPEG and the video will play, but it won’t include the audio, and you can’t edit it in iMovie.

The problem with the missing sound comes from the fact that often with these types camcorders the video and audio files are recorded on a single track, and in order to use the audio the tracks must be separated, or demuxed.  It’s easy enough to do:

On the iMac:
Go to Finder > Applications > MPEG Streamclip and open MPEG Streamclip
Inside MPEG Streamclip go to File > Open (navigate to the .MOD file)
Then go to File > Export as MP4.  Choose a save location.
Once the export is complete, double click on the new file and it should play with sound and can be edited in iMovie.
