How can I save files from an iMac to my external hard drive?

Answer

Your external hard drive is likely not formatted for PC and Mac. 

CAUTION:  All data on the hard drive will be lost when formatting.  Save documents elsewhere, format the drive, then move them back to the hard drive.  DO NOT FORMAT A HARD DRIVE UNLESS YOU'RE WILLING TO LOSE ALL FILES.

  • Open a new Finder window: click on the desktop to choose Finder then go File > New Finder Window
  • Under Macintosh HD choose Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility
  • On the left sidebar, select your hard drive. 
  • Select the Erase tab.  Under the Format menu choose MS-DOS (FAT).  Click Erase and the disk will reformat.
