Q. How do I find government publications?

Answer

Search for known government documents by title in the libraries catalogue and consult the Subject Guides for finding government publications.

If you don't know a particular title or author but suspect that a government agency may have published something on your topic, try a keyword search. Keyword searches are especially useful for finding annual reports and other publications when you have a vague idea of the title and/or issuing body.

Examples:

    Canada and "royal commission" and aboriginal

    "British Columbia" and environment? and assessment

E-book collections such as the Canadian Public Policy Collection or databases such as PAIS are good sources for government documents.

Google is a useful tool for searching for government documents because most government publications are only published on the internet. Try searching for words that might be in the title of the document, or for the name of the issuing government, department or agency.

The Canadian Government of Canada Publications catalogue is the source for current federal publications, in electronic format.
