What is an Index?

Answer

An index is a list of citations. Unlike many databases, online indexes do not contain the actual articles, but rather they are guides that facilitate searching and alert you to the existence of specific articles. Both databases and indexes are listed under databases on the Libraries website, and both are included in searches conducted in Library Search.

To find the actual item, you have use the information from the citation in the index to locate it in a full-text database or in print. Most of the online indexes at UVic provide you with links to the full text of articles -- just click on the link that says something like GetThis, Get this@UVic, or Where can I Get This?
