How do I trace the history of a particular law?

A good step-by-step guide is found in "How to Find Canadian Law: B.C." by John F. I. Farilie. (Law Reserve KE250 Z82F34 2000).



I have provided a summary below:

A complete legislative history for each statute is found in the Historical Table at the end of the statute. This table will take you back as far as 1979, to the RSBC 1979 statute revision.  If you wish to trace back further than 1979, the legislative history is not included in a table, but placed in small type underneath each section.  The first citation in this "sectional endnote" is the previous citation of the section.  The citation may be to an annual statute or to the RSBC 1960 statute revision.

How do you know when to stop?  When there are no longer any previous citations in the sectional endnote. 

If you are looking for a private statute, you must locate the latest "table of private statutes" for the jurisdiction.
