Can I show a youtube video to my class? Is this legal under copyright law?

Answer

Yes, a YouTube video can be shown in a classroom, as long as:

  • the video is streamed directly from the site and is not downloaded
  • include a citation to the video in the power point for the presentation.
  • remove the embedded video in the power point after the presentation and ONLY include the citation and link for reference.
  • the video cannot be uploaded into Brightspace or ECHO360 without permission from the copyright owner
  • if you are conducting your class using zoom (or similar tool), turn off the recording before showing the video

More information is available on the UVic Libraries copyright website.
