What's file mapping?

Answer

In UVicSpace, submissions are "mapped" to other locations so they show up in multiple collections. For example, a biology thesis could be found with all the ETDs under the Faculty of Graduate Studies, and also in the biology sub-community under the Faculty of Science. Such items are not deposited twice, but linked twice.

Because items can appear in more than one location, mapping is helpful for browsing, especially when an item covers multiple subject areas or is authored by more than one UVic researcher. Mapping does not affect how an item is searched.

Only UVicSpace staff can map items. If you have an item that is interdisciplinary or authored by multiple UVic affiliates that you think should be mapped, contact Inba Kehoe to inquire about it: dsphelp (at) uvic.ca . Staff map all ETDs as part of the ETD process.
