What is an abstract?

Answer

An abstract is a short summary of an article or book.  Found at the beginning of journal articles, abstracts are typically shown as an indented block of text.  They are also often found in online databases, along with the citation for the article or book.

Reading the abstract is a quick way to help you determine if the material is relevant for your research before you look for the full text or read the whole work.
