How do I find historical atlases?

Answer

Historical atlases are shelved with atlases on the shelves between the Reference Collection and Maps Library (on the main floor of McPherson Library).  Others are shelved upstairs with regular books. This page highlights some materials from the historical cartographic collections

Search Books & Media for "historical atlas" and the region you want to learn about to find relevant atlases for your research.

Alternatively, use the subject heading '(PLACE) Historical geography Maps' (For example: Illustrated Historical Atlas of the Dominion of Canada has the subject heading Canada Historical geography Maps)

Some titles with their call numbers to get you started:

The Times Atlas of World History : G1030 T54 1993
Palgrave Atlas of the First World War: G1037 P3 2005
Historical Atlas of the World at War: G1030 L49 2009

The library has historical atlases for every region of the world, and others specific to particular time periods, countries, historical events, or themes (travel, conflict, epidemics, etc.)
