Can alumni pay a subscription to access e-journals?

Hi, I'm wondering what the cost is to maintain access to UVic online e-journal resources as an alumni.
Regards,
Rob

Answer

Hi - There is no way to pay for remote access to journals at UVic Libraries. You can get a Community Borrower library card which allows you to take out books, if you are residing in Victoria, but we have no mechanism for you to retain your access to electronic resources (journals, databases, ebooks).   You have a few options, though:

1.  Come into the library, request a temporary netlink ID from the loan desk, and use all of our electronic resources on site. (Free!).

2. We have some subscriptions that are available to alumni, see: http://webapp.library.uvic.ca/databases/results.php?alumni=y You need an alumni netlink ID to access these, and you'll see that it's very few publishers who allow us to do this.

3.  Find articles of interest using Google Scholar or other freely available tool, and request them via Interlibrary Loan at your local public library.

There are also lots of open source indexes (pubmed for medicine, philpapers for philosophy) that might also be useful - and that would also point you to open source articles, freely available online.  If you want some help finding these, let us know what discipline you're interested in and we'll advise you, or you can consult with the subject specialist librarian of your choice.
